THE FALL OF DONALD J TRUMP - LOW EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE & INTELLIGENCE QUOTIENT!!!
DT is a good guy in his own thinking and he perceives himself to be the best thing to have happened to the US since Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. Unknown to him, many people perceive him differently - many see him as a narcissist leader. DT may not be intentionally narcissist but his actions portray him as someone low on Emotional Intelligence (EI). He also appears to have low Intelligence Quotient (IQ).
Emotional Intelligence is one of the best theories of human development, which comprises Self Awareness, Social Awareness, Self Adjustment/Self Management and Relationship Management.
DT appears not to be aware of how he comes across to people, how people like to be spoken to, how people perceive him and how people perceive his actions. Therefore, it appears that he is unable to adjust his relationship style to suit each prevalent situation. He appears to have one style which in his thinking works for everybody and every situation.
Due to his questionable lack of understanding of situations, he appears unable to adjust to situations; therefore, it becomes difficult for him to foster lasting relationships with people or come up with different approaches to handle different situations. Since he handles every situation with his default style, people see him as self centered or narcissist. This is the key reason why he sometimes appears dictatorial and seems to have affinity with or admiration for world leaders perceived as being autocratic. This accounts for the high turnover of people in his government.
He doesn't appear to have high Intelligence Quotient either, as you can see him make unintelligent decisions, e.g. separating children from their parents, randomly picking fights with some countries and people, randomly picking fights with journalists, not listening to intelligence briefs from the US Military, making racist comments/decisions, many others and generally not thinking about the consequences of his actions.
DT is also not assertive. Assertiveness is the most preferred behaviour while relating to others. It is one of the most important attributes in leadership. He is generally aggressive in every situation. Although we understand that human beings are born to be either aggressive, assertive or passive in their behaviours, you will find out that sticking to one behaviour in every situation makes you weak and allow people to perceive you as self-centred. Effective and successful leaders adjust their level of assertiveness to match the prevalent situations.
I'm not sure if DT knows about Situational Leadership, which requires people to adapt their leadership styles to prevalent situations or who they are dealing with. Of course situational leadership requires a high level of emotional intelligence especially being aware of how the environment has changed and adjusting oneself to react inline with the current situation.
In the Parent-Adult-Child Relationship Behavioural Spectrum, DT's default position is that of a child especially a spoilt child. For effective relationship to take place, people tend to adopt the adult behaviour; however, this is difficult for Mr Trump. His spoilt-child default behaviour has it made it difficult for him to have effective discussions/relationships with other world leaders and members of his own cabinet. Many who cannot come down the level of a child simply walk away, resign or avoid him entirely. You now understand why it is easy for him to have an effective relationship with Kim Jong Un because both of them have similar attributes.
DT's low EI becomes evident again if he is analysed using the theory of Challenge Continuum. He doesn't know when to withdraw or concede, confront or challenge. He challenges, confronts and criticises even where the difficulty can be ignored. He always want to win the war rather than solve a problem. This is evident is his 4 year war with the US media. An effective leader with high EI & IQ would have adjusted his style to endear the media to him. He simply doesn't know when to walk away.
Again, DT's low IQ implies that he is unaware of the importance of Stakeholder Management. He simply did not identify those who have High Interest and High influence in his re-election. Since he doesn't understand the principle, he didn't understand that the black, Muslim and Spanish population were critical to his re-election. His handling of the Black Lives Matter protests and different handling of the white dominated group protests were major parts of his failure. Successful leaders understand the importance of different stakeholder groups and how their interests and power can affect their businesses/governments. DT is not intelligent enough to know this.
We may have the best of intentions just like DT has for his country. His interest is genuinely America first and to make America great again; however, it has become obvious that his inability to understand himself, understand other people and most importantly his inability to adjust himself to situations, have robbed him his position as the President of the US.
While some will argue that he was a successful business man, but we should understand that being brilliant is different from being intelligent. Someone can be brilliant but still unintelligent. While DT was obviously a brilliant business man, he needed a high degree of intelligence/wisdom to apply his brilliance effectively especially in public service!
Can we assess ourselves now? Are we low or high in Emotional Intelligence? We may have a high IQ but still low in EI. Do we now understand the importance of our behaviours to our success in life?
